With the devastating weather events we have had in recent years, trees in North Texas are struggling. Here are a few opportunities to get a free tree for your yard and help our urban forest recover!

The City of Dallas is running its Branch Out Dallas program again this year! Dallas residents can register for one of six different tree species during September for pickup in early November.

The free trees available for 2021 are:

• Bur Oak
• Chinquapin Oak
• Sycamore
• American Elm
• Mexican Plum
• Baldcypress

The Texas Trees Foundation is committed to the planting of trees in areas that need them the most. As part of their work, the Foundation is creating green spaces at North Texas school campuses and the neighborhoods around them.

Currently, the Texas Trees Foundation is offering free trees to residents of the areas around four Dallas elementary schools:

• Esperanza “Hope” Medrano Elementary
• Anson Jones Elementary
• Mockingbird Elementary
• Leila P. Cowart Elementary

If you live within a one-mile radius of any of these campuses, you can sign up to receive one or two free trees to plant in the right-of-way between the sidewalk and street in front of your house!

After the storms of 2019, it is a better time than ever to learn about our urban forest and become involved in preserving it. For Dallas homeowners, the Branch Out Dallas campaign was a huge success this year, selling out of trees! If you participated in the program, don’t forget to pick up your trees on Saturday, November 2nd!

The first Friday in November is Texas Arbor Day, and for 2019, the theme is “Healthy Trees, Healthy Lives,” showcasing the connection between community trees, forests, and human health. This year, the city of Plano is hosting the State of Texas Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, November 1st, 2019 at 10 am. Visit the official site for more information or to RSVP.

On Saturday, November 2nd, 2019, Plano continues the Arbor Day celebrations with Plano Tree Fest! From 11 am to 5 pm on November 2nd, join us in Oak Point Park in Plano for a free, eco-friendly event for the whole family. There will be live music, free yoga classes, vendors, games and educational activities for the kids, and a wealth of information for tree lovers young and old!

Saturday night to Sunday morning, November 2nd to 3rd, 2019, Oak Point Park will also be host to the Plano Arbor Day Camp Out! Register online and bring your tent for an evening of campfires, nature walks, storytelling and family fun! Space is limited, so sign up today!

Just like last year, the City of Dallas is giving homeowners free trees as part of its Branch Out Dallas program!

Registration starts September 1st, and continues until September 30th. The trees will be available for pick-up November 2nd.

This round, the available species are:

• Pecan
• Chinkapin Oak
• Shumard (Red) Oak
• Mexican White Oak
• Lacebark Elm

All of these are great Texas trees, but if you wonder which one might be best for your yard, get in touch with your arborist. We are happy to make a recommendation!

If you are not a Dallas resident, you can request a free tree through a partnership of Oncor and the Arbor Day Foundation. Trees can be mailed or can be delivered, as available. Plantings will begin this fall.
